Instructions for Downloading an Excel Spreadsheet Blocked by Organizational Security
If your organization’s security settings are preventing you from downloading an Excel spreadsheet from our website, please follow these steps to resolve the issue. Note that some steps may require assistance from your IT department, depending on your organization’s policies.
- Check Browser Settings:
- Google Chrome:
- Try downloading the file in an incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N or Cmd+Shift+N). This can bypass some extensions or settings that block downloads.
- If blocked, click the three dots (top-right) > “Downloads” to see if the file was flagged. You may see an option to “Keep” the file.
- Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Safe Browsing and temporarily set to “No protection” for the download (re-enable after).
- Microsoft Edge:
- If blocked, check the Downloads pane for a prompt to allow the file.
- Go to Settings > Cookies and Site Permissions > Downloads and ensure automatic downloads are allowed for the website.
- Firefox:
- Check the Downloads panel for any blocked file notifications and select “Allow.”
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Applications and ensure Excel files (.xlsx) are set to “Save File.”
- Google Chrome:
- Temporarily Disable Antivirus or Security Software:
- Some antivirus programs (e.g., McAfee, Norton, or Windows Defender) may block Excel file downloads due to strict settings.
- Right-click the antivirus icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner of your screen) and look for an option to temporarily disable real-time scanning or download protection.
- Attempt the download again, then re-enable the antivirus immediately after.
- If you don’t have permission to adjust these settings, contact your IT department.
- Request IT Department Assistance:
- If the above steps don’t work, your organization’s firewall or content filtering system (e.g., Cisco Umbrella, Palo Alto, or Zscaler) may be blocking the file due to its file type (.xlsx) or the website’s domain.
- Contact your IT team and provide:
- The exact URL of the Excel file.
- A description of the error message (if any).
- A request to whitelist the website’s domain or allow .xlsx file downloads from this specific source.
- Ask IT to verify if the file is being blocked by a policy (e.g., macro-enabled files or untrusted sources).
- Try a Different Browser or Device:
- If possible, try downloading the file using a different browser (e.g., switch from Chrome to Firefox).
- If allowed, use a personal device or a less restricted network (e.g., a mobile hotspot) to download the file, then transfer it securely to your work device.
- Request an Alternative Format or Delivery Method:
- If the above options are not feasible, please contact us to request the file in an alternative format (e.g., .csv or .pdf) or via a secure email attachment.
- Provide us with your preferred email address, and we can send the file directly or share it through a secure file-sharing service.
- Verify the File’s Safety:
- To reassure your IT team, confirm that the Excel file is from a trusted source (our organization) and does not contain macros or executable content unless specified.
- If needed, we can provide a file hash (e.g., SHA-256) to verify the file’s integrity.
Contact Us for Support: If you encounter persistent issues or need further assistance, please reach out to us at [insert your contact information] with details about the error or restriction. We’ll work with you to ensure you can access the file.
