Idaho Healthy Youth Survey

What is the Idaho Healthy Youth Survey?

The Idaho Healthy Youth Survey (IHYS) is a bi-annual, statewide survey of 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders facilitated by the Idaho Office of Drug Policy (ODP).

The Survey is designed to measure the perceptions, opinions, attitudes, and behaviors of Idaho youth related to the use and misuse of alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes/vaping, marijuana, prescription medication, and other drugs.

It is modeled after other states’ surveys and refined by the Idaho State Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup, the Idaho Criminal Justice Commission, and multiple community organizations that work with youth in each of the seven Idaho Public Health Districts.

Why Participate?

The IHYS aims to gather current, local-level data on substance use and misuse and other related behavioral health indicators among Idaho students.

This data allows schools and prevention providers to effectively tailor primary prevention programming to the needs of the youth in their communities; which, in turn, increases the opportunity for these public and non-profit entities to provide targeted prevention strategies.

Participation costs will be fully covered by ODP. ODP will provide District level data to identified point(s) of contact. We will never provide District level data to third parties without prior approval.

How is it Administered?

The IHYS can be administered in-person or virtually during class. It can be provided to students via a paper-based or computer-based format.
In general, we encourage participating schools to allow for one class period for Survey completion.
This year’s survey will require active parent permission (i.e., parent “opt-in”)

2021 IHYS Statewide Results

The 2021 IHYS was administered to nearly 10,000 Idaho students at 54 schools in 24 Districts.

Statewide results of Idaho 12th graders found that in the past month:

1 in 5 drank alcohol
1 in 5 used a vape pen or e-cigarette
1 in 7 used marijuana

Statewide results from students of all 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders found that:

34% said it is easy to get alcohol
24% said it is easy to get prescription drugs for the purpose of misuse
17% said it is easy to get tobacco
18% said it is easy to get marijuana
